    Welcome

    Welcome Norwoodians!

Norwood is a school with a strong community.  Our goal is to help each student be all that they can be; to help them to develop the skills and knowledge so that they can fully participate in and appreciate the cultural, social, political, and economic and aspects of society.

To ensure success for all students, Norwood School provides excellence in instruction of all literacies and takes pride in fostering high levels of wellness in the school and community.

School success is based on the students’ ability to be ready for learning: to be ready to fully engage in the activities and experiences that our amazing teachers prepare each day. Thank you for your support at home to help students be ready for learning each day!

Welcome to the Norwood School Family!

PRINCIPAL MESSAGE

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year at Norwood School. We are so very excited to have you be a part of our Norwoodian community and are looking forward to getting to know you and your children more as the year progresses.

As you may imagine, this year is going to be a very different year due to the precautions we are taking in regards to the COVID-19 virus. We have worked very hard to ensure that we are meeting all of the Alberta Health guidelines, as the safety of our school community is our number one priority. To read through all of our plans, please click on the "Read our school re-entry strategy" on the left side of this page. (PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE HAVE BEEN A FEW CHANGES SINCE THE DOCUMENT WAS POSTED. AN UPDATED VERSION WILL BE POSTED TO SCHOOLZONE ON MONDAY, AUG. 31ST.)

SCHOOL STAFF

This year, we are happy to welcome two new staff members to our team. Ms. Neeraj Sethi and Ms. Sarina Duffy will be joining our support team, and will primarily be working with students in our grade 1-3 classes.

FIRST DAY OF CLASSES

Norwood school will begin the 2020-2021 school year with a staggered entry for all classes. It is our goal that this staggered entry will provide small group opportunities for our students to learn about the school safety routines in place for the 2020-2021 school year. Our first bell rings at 8:34 AM. If students arrive after that time, they will need to enter through the MAIN/FRONT doors and connect with Mrs. Kavanagh in the office. All students will be required to wear masks during entry and exit of the building.

Class lists will be posted on Schoolzone no later than September 1, 2020. School staff will also be making phone calls to ensure that you know what day your child will start their year. The staggered entry days are:

  • Thursday, September 3rd: Rooms 5, 11, 14 will attend
  • Friday, September 4th: Rooms 4, 6, 10 & 12 will attend
  • Regular classes will begin on Tuesday, September 8, 2020.

Each class cohort will have a designated meeting zone that will be clearly marked & will be in proximity to each door entrance. When students arrive, they are to wait in their meeting zone and maintain safe physical distance from each other. The school playground will be closed before school starts. Staff will be outside to supervise the designated meeting spots at 8:15 AM each morning. We ask that students do NOT arrive at school prior to this time.

Please see our "School re-entry strategy" for more information.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

At Norwood school, we are very fortunate to receive large donations of school supplies from the Tools for Schools organization. This year, we ask that students bring to school with them:

  • a backpack
  • indoor running shoes
  • if possible, personal hand sanitizer (non-scented)
  • if possible, disinfecting wipes (Lysol or Clorox is preferred)

SCHOOL NUTRITION PROGRAM

At Norwood School, we are happy to continue to be sponsored through e4c for our snack and lunch program. In order to participate, you MUST complete and return the registration form to the office. Until we have that form, your child will NOT be able to participate in our nutrition program as many of our students have allergies or dietary restrictions.

Our nutrition program will begin on Monday, September 14th.  Until that time, IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOUR CHILD BRINGS A NON-MICROWAVEABLE LUNCH to school each day.

Please refer to our "School re-entry plan" for further information on the safety protocols that will be strictly followed.

MONDAY ASSEMBLIES

Each Monday we meet as a school to welcome the new week, and to celebrate our Nights of Home Reading, student birthdays for the week, and share our outstanding citizenship moments. We will continue this, however they will now be live-streamed to our school community. The live stream code will be provided on School Zone, and we encourage all our our online learners, as well as our parents to join us! Assemblies will take place every Monday starting at 8:55 AM. Please check School Zone for more information.

SCHOOL HOURS (Please review our "School re-entry  plan" for further information regarding arrival and dismissal protocols.)

Each morning, I will be outside greeting and welcoming students and families. If we have not yet met, please come over and introduce yourself! I am looking forward to meeting many more parents and community members as we move forward with the school year.

 Sincerely,
